Brad Levin

Portrait of Brad Levin

Brad Levin (formerly Carmack) is an attorney, HR professional, and writer with interests spanning transhumanism, bioethics, and effective philanthropy. He earned a JD/MPA from Brigham Young University in 2011, where he also studied biology, and was admitted to the California bar that same year. He served on the MTA board of directors from 2011 to 2014 and as secretary of the association.

At MTAConf 2014, Levin delivered a call to action on “Grounded Giving: How to Maximize the ROI of Your Charitable Dollars,” drawing on research from Arthur Brooks and the effective altruism movement to challenge attendees to bring the same rigor to charitable giving that investors bring to financial decisions. He argued that strategic philanthropy is one of the most accessible ways for anyone—regardless of technical background—to advance transhumanist projects and contribute to human flourishing. Levin lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Grounded Giving: Maximizing the ROI of Your Charitable Dollars

2014.04.29

Brad Carmack delivers a call to action for smarter charitable giving, arguing that most people donate based on emotion and habit rather than rational analysis. Drawing on Arthur Brooks's research, he demonstrates that charitable giving correlates with increased happiness, health, and income—even suggesting that each dollar given may drive $3.75 in additional earnings. Carmack urges listeners to consult organizations like GiveWell to evaluate charities' impact, and challenges transhumanists to support causes that advance their shared objectives.
